AbstractBrazilian Legal Amazonia is a 5,000,000 km2 region with different types of forests and savannas, that has been affected by human activity. Land use changes, and, particularly, deforestation, are considered to represent an important contribution to the anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) caused by the transfer of the different amounts of carbon stored in different types of vegetation to the atmospheric in the form of GHG. This paper presents a GIS-based methodology for calculating the incidence of deforestation among the different types of vegetation for the Amazon region. It was developed for the Amazonia Information system, a georeferenced data base developed at INPE, that gathers maps of the deforested areas, vegetation types and other types of data.
